INTERNET CLAIMS. ACTUAL EXPERIMENTS.

Can Magnets Erase Bad Memories From Water?

A current 'structured water' device claims tap water stores unwanted information that can be cleaned with magnets, much like deleting data from a hard drive. CASE 005 will test whether the treatment produces any reproducible physical change—and whether that change persists.

THE INTERNET SAID WHAT? — CASE 005

THE AMNESIA MACHINE

The Claim

Apparently, your tap water has baggage.

A current “structured water” device sold online claims that ordinary tap water stores unwanted information and that passing it through a strong magnetic field can clean that memory, using the same basic analogy as deleting data from a hard drive or magnetic tape.

The product combines:

  • a vortex,
  • dozens of neodymium magnets,
  • claims of “water memory” cleaning,
  • claims that the treated water enters a more beneficial state,
  • claims of altered surface tension,
  • claims of improved plant growth.

Other current structured-water sellers make related claims that vortex and magnetic treatment can reorganize molecular clusters, lower surface tension, raise dissolved oxygen, and improve hydration.

The primary question for CASE 005 is:

Can a vortex-and-magnet device produce a reproducible, persistent physical change in ordinary water?

And the more entertaining question is:

If the water’s “bad memories” were erased, can any instrument tell that the water forgot them?

Preliminary BS Meter

9.4 / 10

This starts high because the specific water-memory claim is extraordinary and poorly defined.

But this case needs more nuance than simply yelling “magnets!”

Magnetic fields, flow, aeration, temperature, dissolved gases, minerals and surface interactions can all affect measurable water properties under some conditions. There is published literature reporting changes in quantities such as conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen and surface tension after magnetic treatment.

So the Mythadis position is not:

“A magnet can never change anything about water.”

The actual issue is:

Does this consumer device create the specific, durable effect being sold—and does the evidence support the language about memory, structure and health?

That is what we will test.

Why We’re Suspicious

1. “Water memory” needs a measurable definition

The seller says water stores unwanted information.

What information?

Stored where?

Encoded in what physical variable?

For how long?

A testable claim needs an observable quantity.

If “memory” cannot be mapped to any measurable physical property, the phrase risks becoming unfalsifiable marketing.

2. Liquid water reorganizes extremely quickly

Water does have real short-range molecular structure.

Its hydrogen-bond network is dynamic rather than static.

Ultrafast spectroscopy published in Nature found that liquid water loses persistent structural correlations on roughly a 50-femtosecond timescale.

That does not prove that every magnetic-treatment claim is false.

It does make a long-lived molecular “memory” claim something that requires strong evidence.

3. Vortexing itself changes things temporarily

Spin water vigorously and you may change:

  • dissolved oxygen,
  • temperature,
  • bubble content,
  • gas exchange,
  • surface behavior,
  • suspended material.

That is why we need more than:

Before device / after device.

We need controls that separate:

  • vortex effects,
  • magnetic effects,
  • handling effects,
  • temperature effects,
  • measurement noise.

4. A measurable change is not automatically “structured water”

Suppose treated water has slightly different dissolved oxygen or surface tension.

That would be an actual result.

It would not, by itself, demonstrate:

  • stored information,
  • erased information,
  • stable hexagonal clusters,
  • improved cellular hydration,
  • detoxification,
  • better health.

Every conclusion must stop at what the measurement actually supports.

5. Sellers sometimes bundle physical and biological claims together

A device might claim both:

  • lower surface tension,
  • better plant growth,
  • better human hydration.

Those are three different questions.

CASE 005 will test them separately.

What Would Change Our Minds

The Preliminary BS Meter should move down if:

  • treated samples show reproducible differences from both sham and untreated controls,
  • differences exceed normal measurement variation,
  • changes persist over meaningful time,
  • the effect follows the active treatment rather than simple vortexing/aeration,
  • independent instrumentation confirms the same effect,
  • biological claims reproduce under randomized controlled testing.

The meter should move up if:

  • active treatment performs like sham,
  • any effect disappears when temperature/aeration are controlled,
  • measured changes vanish within minutes,
  • different instruments fail to reproduce the effect,
  • the seller’s central “memory” language cannot be tied to a measurable variable,
  • biological claims fail under blinded/randomized conditions.

The Test

Purchase one current vortex/magnetic “structured water” device that explicitly makes measurable claims.

If practical, also obtain one second device using a different mechanism or price point.

Do not purchase a device solely because it is the most expensive.

Document:

  • exact product,
  • seller,
  • purchase date,
  • current claim language,
  • instructions,
  • construction,
  • magnet configuration where observable.

Phase A — Physical Chemistry

Start with one large batch of the same source water.

Mix thoroughly before splitting into test portions.

Randomly assign coded samples to:

A — Untreated control

No additional treatment.

B — Handling control

Pour through a non-magnetic funnel/device with similar handling time.

C — Vortex-only control

Create comparable mechanical vortexing without the product’s magnetic field.

D — Magnet-only control

Expose water to a comparable magnetic field without the seller’s vortex path, if practical.

E — Product treatment

Use the device exactly as instructed.

The operator reading the coded samples should not know which condition is which where practical.

Phase B — Measurements

Measure each sample repeatedly.

Minimum useful measurements:

  • temperature
  • pH
  • electrical conductivity
  • total dissolved solids
  • dissolved oxygen
  • oxidation-reduction potential
  • surface tension
  • density

Optional if suitable equipment is available:

  • turbidity
  • hardness/calcium behavior
  • contact angle / wetting
  • evaporation rate

Do not use one inexpensive meter as evidence for a broad molecular claim.

Use calibrated instruments and repeat measurements.

Surface tension

Because multiple structured-water sellers specifically claim reduced surface tension, this is a primary endpoint.

Preferred:

  • proper tensiometer.

Acceptable exploratory alternatives may be used during development, but final public conclusions should rely on defensible measurement methods.

Phase C — Does the “Memory” Persist?

If any reproducible difference appears, measure again at:

  • immediately after treatment,
  • 5 minutes,
  • 30 minutes,
  • 2 hours,
  • 24 hours.

Samples should be stored identically.

This is important.

A temporary change caused by aeration or temperature is different from a durable structural memory.

Plot the measured effect over time.

Phase D — Spectroscopy / Laboratory Check

If Phase A finds a persistent effect—or if budget permits regardless—send coded treated/control samples for independent analysis.

Possible methods to discuss with a suitable laboratory:

  • Raman spectroscopy
  • infrared spectroscopy
  • NMR relaxation measurements

Do not promise that any one of these methods is a universal “structured water detector.”

Before commissioning the analysis, define:

  • what property the seller says changed,
  • whether the chosen method could reasonably detect that property,
  • what result would count as evidence.

An absence of difference on one instrument does not prove that every conceivable property is identical.

It does constrain the claims that instrument is capable of testing.

Phase E — Plant Claim

If the purchased product claims improved plant growth, run a separate randomized experiment.

Use a fast-germinating species such as:

  • cress,
  • radish,
  • or another suitable standardized seed.

Suggested design:

  • same seed lot,
  • same soil/substrate,
  • randomized placement,
  • identical light,
  • identical temperature,
  • identical water volume,
  • coded water conditions.

Groups:

  • untreated water,
  • sham/handling control,
  • product-treated water.

Pre-register endpoints such as:

  • germination percentage,
  • time to germination,
  • shoot length,
  • root length,
  • final fresh/dry mass.

Use enough seeds that one unusually enthusiastic plant cannot become the entire conclusion.

Do not change watering or measurement rules after seeing which group looks better.

Phase F — Optional Blind Taste Test

If the seller claims better taste, run a blinded triangle test.

Participants receive three coded samples:

  • two identical,
  • one different.

Ask them to identify the odd sample.

Repeat across participants.

This tests whether treatment creates a detectable sensory difference—not whether the water is healthier.

Pre-Registered Interpretation

Strong support

The BS Meter should fall substantially if:

  • treatment produces repeatable physical differences,
  • sham/vortex controls do not reproduce them,
  • the effect persists,
  • independent analysis confirms the relevant physical change,
  • claimed biological outcomes reproduce under randomized testing.

Partial support

A device could produce a real but ordinary effect.

For example:

  • vortexing raises dissolved oxygen,
  • treatment changes surface tension briefly,
  • minerals alter conductivity.

That would support the measured effect while not validating water-memory or health claims.

No support

If:

product ≈ vortex control ≈ handling control ≈ untreated

within normal experimental error, then the measurable physical claim fails our test.

The “Memory” Problem

If the seller says the real effect is:

  • energetic,
  • informational,
  • vibrational,
  • quantum,
  • too subtle for conventional instruments,

then they need to define an outcome that can be independently tested.

An undefined effect cannot receive credit merely because an experiment cannot measure it.

Reproducibility Rules

Before testing:

  1. Archive seller claim pages.
  2. Photograph product and packaging.
  3. Record source-water chemistry.
  4. Use one mixed source-water batch per experiment.
  5. Randomize sample codes.
  6. Control temperature.
  7. Use identical containers.
  8. Calibrate instruments.
  9. Repeat measurements.
  10. Preserve raw data.
  11. Define exclusions before testing.
  12. Do not discard inconvenient results without documented instrument/protocol failure.
  13. Decode sample identities only after primary measurements are recorded where practical.

The Verdict

PENDING

The Receipts

Current commercial examples:

  • Current Etsy listing — Structured Water / Water Memory Cleaning Device: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1643146459/structured-water-large-water-memory

Seller states ordinary tap water stores unwanted information and describes magnetic treatment as cleaning that information using a principle analogous to deleting information from hard drives or tapes. The device combines a vortex with a neodymium magnet array and also claims altered surface tension and faster plant growth.

  • Fractal Water — Technology: https://www.fractalwater.com/technology/

The company says vortex action prepares/restructures molecular clusters and a magnetic array locks those structural changes into place. It also claims lower surface tension, higher dissolved oxygen, and more organized molecular clusters.

  • Fractal Water — Healthy Hydration: https://www.fractalwater.com/applications/wellness/healthy-hydration/

Current marketing says vortex/magnetic treatment creates more bioavailable water and connects lower surface tension and higher dissolved oxygen to improved cellular hydration.

  • Water Liberty — Vitalizer Plus: https://www.waterliberty.com/products/vitalizer-plus-machine-vip-customers-only

Product marketing says magnetic and infrared forces reduce water-cluster size, create hexagonal water for more rapid bodily penetration, and increase oxygen by up to 30%.

Scientific context:

Important nuance:

There is published literature reporting measurable effects of magnetic treatment on some water properties under some conditions. CASE 005 therefore does not assume in advance that magnets or vortexing can never change a measurement.

The experiment asks whether the specific consumer device and its claimed durable effects survive controlled testing.
